David Howell Petraeus was born on November 7th, 1952 in Cornwall-on-Hudson in New York to parents, Sixtus and Miriam (Howell) Petraeus. In 2001 he was promoted to Major General. In 2007 Petraeus was promoted to General and soon after in April 2008 he was nominated by President Bush to command U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida. Dwight David Eisenhower was born on October 18th 1890 in Denison,Texas. His parents David Jacob Eisenhower and mother, Ida Elizabeth Stove moved to Kansas in 1892. His father was a well educated man but found it difficult to support his family resulting in Dwight and his six brothers to grow up under poor circumstances.

Dwight went to school in Abilene, Kansas where he graduated in 1909. For the next two years he worked to help fund his younger brother Edgar's college education. Once Edgar graduated Dwight decided to take the entrance exam for the Naval Academy. Though he passed the exam he was ineligible because of his age. Not to be deterred he contacted Kansas Senator Joseph Bristow who recommended him to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New york. Eisenhower's application was accepted and in 1911 he entered into the Academy and graduated in 1915 in the upper half of his class. Interesting to note is that the class of 1915 became to be known as the "the class that stars fell on" because 59 of its members reached the rank of general.

From 1915 to 1918 Eisenhower served in camps based in Texas and Georgia. During World War I though he didn't see combat he played a significant roll in training tank crews in the new tank corps eventually being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, third highest rank in the corps. Once the war was over his rank was reverted to captain but soon after he was promoted to major and was transferred to Camp Meade in Maryland. During peacetime his career and advancement in the ranks was halted. It wasn't until 1936 he was again promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, his first promotion in 16 years. Due to his administrative abilities Dwight was promoted to brigadier general in October 1941.

When America entered World War II Dwight D. Eisenhower was assigned to the General Staff where he was involved with making war plans to defeat the Japanese and Germans. Though he had never seen battle his acumen and talent for strategic planning was noticed and soon after he was promoted to Assistant Chief of Staff in charge of New Operations. The 11th of 13 children, Alvin Cullum York was born on December 13th, 1887, to parents Mary Elizabeth and William Uriah York, in a rural area outside of Pall Mall, Tennessee in a two room log cabin. The York children attended school for less than a year because of the need for them to help support the family. The York sons worked on the farm harvesting for the family and their mother made all their clothing. Their father, William worked as a blacksmith to supplement their livelihood.

Alvin York was prone to drinking heavily and fighting often. Despite these negative attributes he was a regular church goer and attended the Church of Christ of Christian Union, a Protestant denomination. It was in 1914 at a revival meeting that York decided to mend his ways, giving up drinking and fighting to live a Christian life. With the advent of World War I a draft was instituted for all men ages 21 to 31 and on June 17th, 1917 Alvin York at the age of 29 signed as a conscientious objector. His request was rejected then he appealed and was denied a second time.

In November 1917 York was drafted into the Army and trained at Camp Gordon in Georgia. Alvin York spoke often with his company commander and his battalion commander about his feelings about war and killing. His battalion commander was a devout Christian and understood the conflict going on in York's mind. He quoted verses out of the Bible that pertained to violence and when such violence is acceptable in the eyes of the Lord. His commander gave him a 10 day pass to go home and think about what they discussed. Alvin York returned to camp convinced that God meant for him to fight and He would keep him safe.

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France. The French leadership felt that any monument celebrating American freedom should be a joint project for both the French and American people. France provided the statue and America provided the pedestal and site. The statue designed by Frederic Bartholdi and began construction in the early 1870's. The statue was dedicated on October 28th, 1886 at Bedloe Island in New York Harbor. In 1956 Congress officially changed the name of Bedloe Island to Liberty Island.

The Statue of Liberty also known as Lady Liberty is a robed female that represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom who bears a torch and a tabula ansata which translates, "tablet evoking the law. On the tablet is inscribed the date of the Declaration of Independence and at Liberty's feet a broken chain symbolizing freedom.

During World War II, though the statue remained open for visitors during the day, its lights were unlit at night because of blackouts due to possible air attacks. New lighting was installed in 1944-45 and were lit everyday after sunset for a few hours since V-J day, the end of WWII. In 1957 it was decided to keep the lights on from sunset to dawn.

Lady Liberty has gone through renovations over the years most notable are the renovations begun in 1984 in preparation for the centennial celebration of the statue. July 3rd to the 6th, 1986 "Liberty Weekend" was held and the statue was rededicated with President Ronald Reagan presiding over the festivities and French President Francois Mitterrand in attendance.
